Notebook Blogging #9

More than half the guys in my class are African American and they are all great guys but I have to say their clothing style for the most part leaves something to be desired. I just want to knock upside the head the dude who started the fashion of extremely baggy clothes and pants riding at least halfway down your waist.

It seems that pants are no longer there to cover your rear, rather they are just there to cover your legs. I am dead serious here, there are several of my class mates who literally wear their pants on their upper thighs, as in below their rears, as in they have to walk funny to keep their pants from just falling to the floor.

Maybe pants are much more comfortable riding on your upper thighs but I doubt it. It seems they are all just succumbing to some weird fashion trend. The lowness of the pants actually explains the overly large shirts and when I say overly large I mean just that. These shirts reach almost to their knees. But then since their pants are on their thighs, they have an excuse for such large shirts, they don't want to be exposing their undergarments or worse to the world.
At least I think that is the idea, it works relatively well while standing, but sitting down is another issue :o :red:

Yeah, I think this is one style that seriously needs to go. Another one has to do with baseball hats or lids as they are now called. It seems when you buy a hat you keep the size sticker on. Why? You might ask, for the world to know what size you wear of course! Also make sure you buy several sizes too large and definitely wear it at a jaunty angle. Whatever you do, do not bend the brim it, needs to be as flat as possible so as to offer a clear view of your size sticker.

To illustrate the hat style popular today, I went into the "Sarah and William crazy picture archive" and present to you a rather bad example.

If you notice, the "do not bend the brim" law was broken, but we tried to make up for it by placing our hats at an even more jaunty angle than is normally seen.

A Totally Random Post. :)

For the past couple of minutes I have been looking at shoes online.

I kinda have a shoes fetish :)
But I do need to get some more tennis shoes, the pair that I have are falling apart. I mean they are literately falling apart. There are holes in the soles on both shoes.... the shoelaces are in pieces..... ummmm you get the point.
I really want to get a pair of Converse after William showed me how cool they were. (William has 5 pairs...I think) The funny thing is.... Converse were around when I was little and my Grandmother always wanted me to get a pair. Once a year for my Birthday, she would take me shoe shopping. I'm not sure why I didn't like them. Maybe my Grandmother wanted me to get a color I didn't like.

Sooo, while I was looking at tennis shoes online....I had to go look at the sandals especially when there is a category called Bright Colors. I told you.... I have a shoe fetish. :)
I found the coolest shoes. I would never buy them because I'm not sure that I have anything that matches, and oh I don't spend 100.00 on a pair of shoes. :) Here is a picture.

And while I'm at it here are some converse that I like. Ummm well... here is one pair that I like.... American Idol is on.....so I'm off to watch that.

No I am not in the military.....or turkey hunting!!!

Today I decided I would wear camo pants....
Notice the brilliant woodland pattern!

I left for class before anyone else was up and when I arrived home was immediately questioned on my attire. It was actually very funny, it went something like this:

I walk in the door....
My mother asks why I look like I am in the military
I get a drink of water...
Sarah comes in the room and asks if I really wore "that" today
I get something to eat...
Samuel comes in and asks why I am dressed as a soldier
I continue eating...
Anna asks some variation of the "why are you in camo" question
I finish eating and head to my room,
when I am coming back down the stairs....
Molly sees me and right off asks why I am dressed like someone from the military!!!

Have I missed something? Is wearing camo now frowned upon in my family? I was in class and walking among crowds of people and the only question I got was "Are you fixing to go turkey hunting?" :p I get home and in 15 minutes get five questions as to why I am wearing camo!! Such is life with my wonderful family.... :D

Polo shirts.....

I like "polo" shirts, aka a short sleeved shirt with a collar which typically has 2-3 buttons below the collar and is usually made of cotton. Like this:
They have been adopted by most people in today's society as "business casual" attire. Not as dressy as a button down shirt with a tie, but nicer than a regular old t-shirt. Actually for most people today, a polo is considered "dressy". I have a whole post on society and the standards of clothing but it will have to wait because that is not today's topic. Today the topic is polo shirts, or rather one thing about them that is slightly irritating.

When good ol' René Lacoste started making his "polo" shirts (They were not called polo shirts back then) I am not sure if the shirts had the two small slits on the bottom of either side but most polo shirts today have them. I know there must be a purpose behind those two small slits, after all, fashion always has been created with a purpose, no? :p

Anyway those two slits at the bottom of a polo shirt while interesting, weaken the structural integrity of the shirt. Ha! I bet you never thought you would be reading the words "structural integrity" in the context of shirts. Yes, the slits are reinforced, but nevertheless they are still a weak link, ready to be exploited to the detriment of the poor shirt!

Now maybe this is not the case for everyone, but I have to be careful when putting on polo shirts because if I am not, a sound reaches my ears which is painful to any purchaser of clothes. The sound of the very threads of the shirt ripping right at that little slit at the bottom of the shirt.
Believe me I have tried to prevent it and as long as I don't stretch too much while putting on the shirt usually it is saved from damage. Still, I feel those two little slits at the bottom of my shirt have no real purpose other than to cause me irritation and should be done away with....Below is my poor orange (which happens to be one of my favorite colors) polo and the results of me not being careful.... :(

Belts with no purpose?

Always one to speak my mind when it comes to fashions, (Because I know so much about it :p) I realized I have not tackled anything on this subject in a while, and in the absence of anything else to post on...I have decided to give my thoughts on belts. :p Not just any type of belt, rather the current women's trend you could say, of wide belts that cut their upper torso in half and have no function to speak of. Much like my post on Pointy high heel shoes this subject came into my head after I had an encounter with a lady wearing something along the lines of this:

Yeah I know that is a bad picture, I just grabbed the first one I saw online...It took me a few minutes to actually find a picture similar to what the lady was wearing. Back to the subject on hand, or on stomach...Why oh why do people where belts that high up? There is no purpose, except maybe to keep your shirt from just flying off which would probably only happen if you jumped out of an airplane! I just don't understand it! I seriously wanted to take a picture of this woman just so I could laugh at it.

Ok I don't want to rile any readers up, so as clarification, while I don't particularly like it, I know the empire waist style is slightly similar to this current trend in looks. I am not saying I think high waisted dresses or shirts are a crazy idea, rather the idea that a ridiculously wide belt, in the middle of your body, looks good. I do not know where this fashion trend came from but I think it needs to go back ASAP....

Hawaiian shirts

The other day in a round about way I ended up being in the men's department of Sears looking for dress clothes. Being a guy I don't normally roam department stores alone in search of clothes, not because I don't like clothes, I do, in fact I have a whole theology about clothes and society but in the interest of not chasing away the few people who read this I will leave it at that. Anyway I browsed around looking for something on sale and came across Lands End dress shirts for 6.50 and right there on top was my size! Let me stop here and say, I don't think I have ever, as in never ever in my life, found my size in a dress shirt that is on sale, it just does not happen, I am a weird size. Anyway I was about as pumped as you can be about a white dress shirt :D I actually might have (unconsciously of course) had an exclamation of joy, I can't remember exactly, but the sales lady messing with the pants a few racks down looked at me a bit strange. I just grinned at her like a fool.....

After finding 4 more dress shirts @ 6.50 that were my size I was trying to figure out how I could afford to buy all 5. Ok well I could afford to buy them but even with such a great price I could not convince myself I needed 5 more shirts. I am thrifty, too thrifty sometimes according to my mother. The truth is I have no problem at all spending money, but only on something that is a necessity, if it is not a necessity I will try to find the best deal I can and if not I just won't buy the item... Everyone who knows me well has probably heard one or more of stories of the extremes I have gone to in my search for the "best" deal. Maybe I will post them sometime, but this post is already getting a bit long and we have not gotten to the reason of this post, Hawaiian shirts.

When I went to check out, there was this older guy around 60ish with a shirt on that said "grandpa" pretty ordinary looking. What was not ordinary, or at least not to me, was what he was purchasing, Hawaiian shirts! I mean not muted colors either these were pretty out there. I just thought it was rather funny to see this old dude getting shirts like that. I personally have a few Hawaiian shirts myself there is nothing wrong with looking like a sleazy car sales man once and a while but they should be worn at the beach or some other tropical place. Where we live is hours from the beach and we are nowhere near a tropical climate, so when I saw this older man buying Hawaiian shirts I just had to shake my head. Standards for the type of clothes people wear everyday sure have changed! Me in a Hawaiian shirt in the proper environment:
Notice how the shirt matches the scenery? This beach was actually where I met a very good friend of mine, Red. Even though sometimes he can be a real pain, we still seem to run into each other from time to time. He actually showed up for a visit a few weeks ago and just now left.

Pointy high heel shoes?

Seriously, what is the deal? There is no way they are comfortable and I personally don't even think they look that good on women. Maybe I am the only person who thinks that because they are enormously popular and have been for years but I still can't understand it. The reason this is even on my mind is today I brought my granddad to an appointment he had with a hearing aid sales person and while she was talking I looked down and happened to see a pair of weapons on her feet!!!

I kid you not, exactly like that! Besides their dangerous nature they also looked way too big for her feet, it was almost like she was standing on tiptoe right about where the bend is on the bottom of the shoe. It was obvious that the first three inches of the shoe was just empty space. I personally don't know why someone would wear something like that at all, let alone while working! Anyway I just felt like getting that off my chest, I am not going to pretend to know the faintest thing about woman's fashion and this is something I probably will never understand.

Oh! Before my sister comes along and adds some color commentary, I want to clarify that I have no problem with women wearing heels, I understand it makes woman feel taller and shows their legs off a bit. For that matter my boots have about a 3/4in heel. What I am lost about is high, pointy heels like the picture above.....
